Chapter 5

Armed with a renewed hope that came with a brand new day and the positive talk he had with Quantavius, Chad decided he’d give a conversation with Tomika another go. He had to use this quarantine to his advantage. He last saw Tomika yesterday – crazy considering they were under the same roof and all. She’d taken extra care to ensure she didn’t run into him. That was yesterday...

Surely the smell of bacon and eggs would lure her out of the bedroom.

Tomika loved to eat. He remembered how she’d been chowing down on crab legs when they were at the beach and tossing back margaritas. Those were the days – days that had him asking why it was so easy to fall in love, while staying in love required so much more effort? What if his plan didn’t work and the smell of bacon didn’t lure her out of the room? Then what? Whatever the case, he had cooked enough for two people. All he could do now was hope for the best.

“What are you doing?”

He turned to look at her upon hearing her voice. His plan had worked. He didn’t answer right away since he was in awe. She had her hair pulled up in a ponytail and was still wearing a gown that laid on her body just right – one of those sheer ones where he could trace her breasts with his eyes.

He cleared his throat and said, “I thought I’d cook you breakfast.”

The deep tone of his voice coupled by the fact that he wasn’t wearing a shirt wreaked havoc on her senses. It didn’t help that those sweatpants were riding low on his hips, that the muscles in his back were pronounced and she had visions of digging in them with her fingertips while his mouth feasted on her neck.

“Tomika.”

“What?” she asked, coming out of a daydream that felt too real.

“Did you hear me?”

“What are you talking about?”

“You asked me what I was doing. I said I’m cooking breakfast for you.”

“I don’t need you to cook for me, Chad. I can cook for myself. You don’t live here anymore, remember?”

“I do live here.”

“You—”

He cut her off. “I’m taking the initiative to cook for you. Can you at least sit down?”

“Why? Is this your way of trying to talk to me? Again?”

“So, you agree that we need to have a conversation. You’re angry with me, Mika, and I have no idea why.”

“Maybe that’s the problem. You should have a clue when you don’t.”

Chad sighed deeply. “Tomika, can you please sit down for a moment?”

“Can you put on some clothes?” she shot back.

He looked down at himself. As far as he was concerned, he had on enough clothes. She was the one with the see-through gown, but he wasn’t complaining. Not at all.

Tomika reluctantly sat down. Bacon ain’t never did nothing to her and she was hungry. She had a growing baby to feed, but could she tolerate his presence just long enough to finish her
